Overview of Empire City, a Major Metropolitan Area in New York State
Empire City is not a widely recognized term referring to the city of Yonkers, which is located just north of New York City in Westchester County, New York. As one of the largest cities in New York empirecitycasinoresort.ca State outside of New York City proper, Yonkers has its own rich history and cultural identity.
Geography
Yonkers’ strategic location on the Hudson River allowed it to develop early as a major industrial center during the 18th century. Today, the city continues to be bounded by the Hudson River to the west, with many of its historic manufacturing facilities having given way to more modern commercial development. The city’s eastern edge is shared with New York City proper.

History
Yonkers’ early industrial history began during the colonial era with the establishment of various manufacturing facilities along the Hudson River. Yonkers is vulnerable to extreme weather events that result from climate change including more frequent flooding due to sea level rise & intense storms but also has made efforts toward reducing carbon emissions through initiatives such as developing green spaces, green infrastructure projects and participating in the City Resilience Program of Rockefeller Foundation.
